Believe it or not, there are a few fish that were never painted or sold (the big versions). If you would like your own fish with a custom hand-painted design on them, please contact me. If you lost a fish in Katrina, we can replicate the original design on an original fiberglass fish made from the same mold at the time of original production. sean@industrialsurrealism.com (here in New Orleans) Thanks for reading.

I don't really have a tale to tell but I did want to let the fans of this kind of 'Public Art Projects' another place they can go to see more of this. If a community still has their site up....it will most likely be on the 'Links' page of ................ http://www.publicartprojectsofamerica.com/

I WAS IN FLORIDA A WEEK AGO AND SAW A SALTWATER FISH THAT I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE. A MAN HAD CAUGHT IT FISHING FROM LAND, ON A HOOK (MAYBE A NUMBER 2 HOOK)IT WAS ABOUT ONE FOOT LONG. WHEN IT WAS LAYING ON THE SAND IT LOOKED KIND OF LIKE A CATFISH WITHOUT THE FINS. BUT WHEN THE HOOK WAS REMOVED AND THE MAN PICKED IT UP BY PUTTING A PAIR OF NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS IN ITS MOUTH. IT DISPLAYED A VERY LARGE FIN ON EITHER SIDE OF ITS BODY (ABOUT AS BIG AS A SMAL CHILDS HAND) JUST BEHIND IT HEAD. ALSO IT HAD SOMETHING THAT LOOKED LIKE LIKE THE LEGS OF A LOBSTER JUST UNDER THE FRONT OF ITS BODY, I DID NOT COUND THEM BUT I THINK MAYBE 6 OR EIGHT. THIS FISH WAS CAUGHT IN WATER MAYBE 4 FEET DEEP AT THE INLET TO SAINT ANDREWS BAY ACROSS FROM PANAMA CITY FRORIDA. THE MAN WAS FISHING INSIDE THE JETTIES THAT PROTECT THE INLET.I HAVE TRIED TO FIND SOME INFO ON THE INTERNET, BUT HAVE NOT HAD ANY LUCK. DOES ANYONE HAVE AND ANSWER FOR ME AS TO WHAT IT WAS.

I happended across your website, and I too am interested in purchasing some fish for my collection. Are they for sale, and if so, please provide info and respond to PZerfass@comcast.net. I hope you would continue this effort..it's a great vehicle to raise money, as well as showcase the local artists' talent. Many thanks. PZ

Hi fish lovers!, I am a born fisherman in florida, usa! one day my assistant who helps me in my big green boat (rosmary rishop) went fishing by himself one day! his name is max and he doesn't know very much about fish! so anyway! he was so stupid that he caught a baby shark (he didn't know it was a shark at the time) and brought it back to the coast line! when everyone found out it was a shark he was put to prison or 40 days for nearly harming people! (how's that then?) i don't know but when i look back it is a relly funny story! :)from jadey

HI Folks.
My name is Sonya Paz, I am an artist in San Jose California and I am involved in the project called SharkByteArt (SharkByteArt.com) in San Jose,an event very much like your "Festival of Fins".
A few of us artists here are looking for advise on the clear coatings that were used in your event and need some (quick) advice on what you used for these similar fiberglass animals. Another concern we have had is the type of pain that was suggested to used to prevent fading/cracking etc. for this outdoor event. Our event is scheduled to go live on August 1, 2001. What helpful hints can you offer for us?

PLease email me at art@spazart.com.

Thanks much,
Sonya

What a treat and thanks to Judy for the fine web project. My family and I were in New Orleans for about a week and left just last night (6-2-01). As we had a late flight out, we checked out of our hotel and spent the day running around downtown trying find fish. We located 9 by browsing or asking folks (very friendly people) that we thought would know. I wish I knew of this site while we were in town. So, is this still an on-going project? I have locations for a few that you might not know where they ended up if anyone is interested. Please Email as I may not get back to this Sightings page anytime soon. First, I just want to thank Judy (whoever you are)for setting up this great website. Without it, I would never have found all the fish that I did. Also, thinks to the various readers who responded to my dumb questions! I spent today trying to track down the last of the fish, and in a couple of cases, got very frustrated! Surgeon Sturgeon out at the United Way on Leonides is not available. I spoke to a nice lady there named Susan who said it has already been sold. But, she says it is a twin to Marbelous Marlin; and she is trying to get the new owner to send her some pictures to pass out! Nurse Shark at Ochsner on Jeff Hwy is in the critical care tower, and I was told that I couldn't go up there. However, it is supposed to be moved soon to a more accessible location. They do have two of the traveling fish in the main lobby-The King Fish and Fly Fish. The third traveling fish (Our Country Fish of Thee) is the one at Loyola-Danna Center. You have to go downstairs in the center to find it in the PJ's Coffee House.I spoke to a guy at YLC about King Tux (all I have ever found is his empty pedastal) and he said he thought this particular fish was in Memphis, but would be returning. The only other one I missed was Herbed Fish, and it died before I got there. I have had a lot of fun on this 4 month odyssy-walked a bazillion miles around the city, and drove a bunch too, but it was worth it. I just wish some of them were more accessible like Allie the Angel Fish, and some of the others is places that are locked up on weekends, making second or even third trips necessary. But, what can you do. Again, Judy, thanks a bunch for this website, and if I don't get these last few fish, at least I have given it my best shot!

There is a fish at Cafe Giovanni on Decatur Street. A new one will be at Stella Jones Gallery in Place St. Charles. A new one is also at the Loyola Univ-Danna Center near PJ's Coffee Shop. Just two more weeks before they all get reeled in.

King Tux is on tour with Mardi Gras Mambo, Fly Fish, The King Fish and a few more. The Seersucker is priceless! It is in front of Stone, Pigman's building at 546 Carondelet St...looks just like an uptown New Orleans attorney

Anybody have a clue where to find "A Lot O Fish" (supposed to be at 909 Poydras), and "Mardi Gras Mambo"? The latter fish is traveling around the city according to Mardi Gras World, but they aren't sure where it is right now. Also, does anyone know anything about "king Tux"/ I keep checking, but all I find is an empty cement base with his name on it. Thanks for any help.

I went fishing today and caught a few that no one has mentioned. The two fish expected at City Hall have finally arrived; they stand on either side of the main entrace on Perdido. Also I found one called "Carp N Ter Gone Fishin'" in front of the Equitable Building at 1555 Poydras. It's fabulously funny and was completely unexpected since it has not appeared on any list I have seen.

Anybody know where Blues Breaux went? We couldn't find it at 638 Canal. We also could not find Blow Fish at 444 St. Charles Ave. Anyone know the current whereabouts? Herbed Fish didn't survive the drought and is no longer at Metro Bistro. One of my favorites so far is A Well-schooled Fish from Trinity E-Fish-Copal School. It's a fish on a bicycle with a pack on its back.

Thanks for having a great site. It is "fishy" that your site has the artists names correct and the "OFFICIAL FESTIVAL OF FINS SITE" does not. Barrister-cuda was created by Luis Colemares, Paul Lane, and Sam LeBanc.

"Fish Mettle" located in the Texaco Center Lobby at 400 Poydras has Larry Nevil listed as the Artist on your web site; however, the plaque on the fish lists Allen Cruthirds, which is correct. Allen's my grandson and I watched him painting the fish. This is great websight and we appreciate the work you've done.

This is a testament to what a great idea the Festival of Fins was in attracting attention to the city--attention of ANY and ALL kinds. It also shows just how different people can be(even-or especially--in your own family).
Part-I----I work downtown and was getting a ride from work with my sister. The fish had been showing up periodically for about 2 to 3 weeks. My sister NEVER watches the news, reads the news or listens to the news. On this particular day she picked me up and literally screamed at me as soon as I got into her car. "What the hell are all these fish doing around here!, I know you know, PLEASE tell me. They are everywhere I go!"
Part II----My dad is somewhat of a homebody and doesn't get to go out into the city-especially downtown too often. He, unlike my sister, reads every news article and watches the news several times a day. One weekend he and I were running several errands. As I drove into the downtown area, HE screamed "The FISH, THE FISH, I finally get to see the fish! I've been hearing about them for weeks but I never got to see one!" I took great civic pride in being able to help my sister and father become fish fanatics like me!! We toured the city during the Essence Festival FINDING and FOTOGRAPHING FINS!!! Many thanks to the YLC, the artists and the sponsors!!

This IS a great site! This isn't technically a siting; It is a question about two fish I have seen. It has been fun figuring out the themes before reading the titles or sponsors. I can't figure out two of them. This posting may confirm my ignorance regarding art, but I am learning and enjoying this project. the questions are about two fish at the Energy Centre 1100 Poydras, The Dali Sol, school of fish is beautiful. I figured out all of the classes represented, Art, Music, etc. WHAT does the attached fish with the arm mean? The other is the cowfish at the entrance to the building, it isn't sponsored by Borden or the Beef association, is it just a nod to Chicago's cows? THANKS FOR ANY HELP!

We have a fish that we have placed in the Canal Street entrance of the Chateau Sonesta hotel on the 800 block of Canal Street. It is "Ignatius J. Reillyfish" and it truly captures the essence of one of the most recognizable and curious characters of New Orleans literature. The statute is probably tied in to its particular location more than any other, as the Ignatius fish is in the display case under the original D.H. Holmes clock in front of the original D.H. Holmes building, and in close proximity to the bronze statue of Ignatius himself on Canal Street. Any "Confederacy of Dunces" fan will remember Ignatius waiting for his Momma under the clock in the opening scene of the novel. We invite everyone to come and see the fish, and you to come and take a photograph for your site.

This is a fantastic site. Thank you so much for putting this together. One of my favorites in on N. Rampart in front on a hotel on the lakeside. I don't know the title, but it has a jazz theme, a yellow fish with a trumpet. It is near Armstrong Park, so it may be related. Thanks for sharing. Sara

There is a great "flying fish" at the Place St. Charles. The "sculpture" is located outside the building hanging from the ceiling. It is a great concept. (Very creative artist)

There are also two "great" fish at One Shell Square building (outside). One represents "law & Justice" and the other one represents the "environment and technology". These two fish and the "King Fish" inside the Energy Center reminded me of the "Chicago" cows which I visited last June. When you look at them, they "talk" they have a "motif" that you can identify. I hope that the remining fish are just not a "painted" fish but it will represent something.
